In April of 2014 my husband and I travelled to Honolulu for a 5 day vacation. It was my first trip to Hawaii so I had no idea what to expect or which island to visit. We got a great deal for flights and hotel with WestJet for under $800 per person. This was a memorable trip for us because we got engaged on our first day of the vacation. Honolulu is full of great shopping, food and night life. Waikiki Beach was clean and the water was warm. There were surf shops all over offering lessons. The beach was always packed though and depending on the time of day could be difficult to find a spot to sit. If you are looking for a laid back, relaxing vacation I wouldn’t suggest Honolulu. It is beautiful but is very busy and loud with all the city life.
The hotel we stayed at was the Ohana Waikiki East. A 5 minute walk to the beach or you could take the shuttle bus. It is in a great location within walking distance to anything you would need. There is a free shuttle that picks you up outside the hotel every 10 minutes and can drop you off at one of it’s many designated stops. The hotel was older style but not run down. The room was decent size but not newly renovated which was to be expected due to the cost. For how often we were in our room it was a great choice of hotel based on its location. The hotel has an outdoor pool with lots of lounge chairs and a tiki bar.
There are so many great restaurants along Waikiki beach. The ones I loved were of course The Cheesecake Factory, Eggs N Things and Makittii Hawaii. Makittii is a Japanese seafood buffet that was amazing and had a free Polynesian show included in the price. At the time it had been rated Hawaii’s best buffet for 3 years in a row. My Hawaii must try items are a acai bowl full of fresh fruit for breakfast and kona blend coffee! Make sure you go to their local restaurants that aren’t a chain because the food does not disappoint.
We were always on the go in Honolulu. There is great shopping along Waikiki Beach and an awesome massive mall called Ala Moana Center that the shuttle from your hotel can take you to. The highlight of the trip was firstly getting engaged but also the amazing excursion we went on.
The sightseeing tour we went on was around $70 per person and was 8 hours. The tour took us out of the city to see where Jurassic park was being filmed at the time. We stopped at some great lookouts to get gorgeous photos. My favourite was the Diamond Head Lookout. We visited the Dole Pineapple Plantation as well as a coffee plantation. For lunch we stopped at a shrimp farm for some fresh seafood. Our last stop on the trip was snorkeling on a secluded beach and getting to see the sea turtles lounging all along the beach. Another great thing about the tour was a photographer came along to get professional shots so you didn’t have to worry about your camera or taking photos. The rest of the trip we did a lot of shopping, eating and lounging on the beach.
